Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth On my toplay-list or what I'm waiting for release (on consoles): XD For example I'm not a big fan of Blasphemous which a lot of people tend to love (pixelart and OST is amazing though). Everybody has different taste for sure and that's good so that are just my personal twisted opinions. It's my favorite genre and I rate every title I've played into masterpiece, great & good+ which land on this list for recommendations and good-, meh & avoid won't land on this list. The Witch and the 66 Mushrooms (mini mv)ĭon't care if it's a big epic or just a smaller scale mini metroidvania. Bookbound Brigade (it took me a second attempt to really appreciate this game after some hours and movement upgrades) Castlevania: Circle of the Moon/Harmony of Dissonance Finding Teddy 2 aka Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony In Exodus (no need to play the first one, it's self contained, first one is a Point&Click adventure) Nightmare Boy (people love it or hate it, I think it's chaotic fun) Odallus: The Dark Call (Lvl select with necessary backtracking) Some good & great entries, just my opinion (unsorted): Castlevania: Symphony of the Night/Aria of Sorrow/Dawn of Sorrow/Portrait of Ruin/Order of Ecclesia Pitfall: The Lost Expedition aka Pitfall: The Big Journey (3D) Control (one of those 3D metroidvanias you asked about) The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human Phoenotopia: Awakening (fair to say it's more a Zelda 2-like but I always had the feeling of playing a metroidvania and it's described as one basically everywhere) Batbarian: Testament of the Primordials I really feel like Shovel Knight has many of the Metroidvania qualities to it, and is one helluva game, but thought it didn't count since it is a level-by-level affair. King's Field 1-3 (some of my all-time favorites, as I'm sure some of you already know) Shadow Complex Remastered (damn underrated game) Ori and the Blind Forest (both of these games are absolutely stunning looking)

What are some of your favorite Metroidvanias? What do you consider a Metroidvania? Are you one of those that only consider 2D games Metroidvanias? Or are you open to the idea of 3D games being included, such as King's Field or the Batman Arkham games? Do Resident Evil games count since there's a lot of map unlocking and backtracking (though not much in the sense of character progression)? So I decided we needed a dedicated thread to this wonderful genre of video games. I love the sense of exploration and character progression. I LOVE Metroidvanias! It all began with Super Metroid on the SNES, which I still consider the top of the class in Metroidvania.
